READ: Esther 1:1-12

Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon: and he shaved himself, and changed his raiment” – Genesis 41:14

Vashti did not adjust herself to her husband, the king. Vashti was an older wife who was tired of adjusting herself and adapting to her husband. She was saying to herself, “This nonsense must stop! How long will I be asked to do such silly things?” She simply refused to adjust her life and obey her husband.

On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, the seven chamberlains that served in the presence of Ahasuerus the king, To bring Vashti the queen before the king with the crown royal, to shew the people and the princes her beauty: for she was fair to look on. But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him. Esther 1:10-12

The whole realm of King Ahasuerus was outraged at the refusal of the king’s wife to adapt herself to her husband’s desires. Indeed, many wives grow tired of the adjustments that they have to make to please the whims and fancies of their husbands.

One lady whose husband had died was asked whether she would marry again. She simply answered, “Never again. I cannot give myself to this silly ‘open and close’ business any more.” You see, this lady had been married for many years and had been opening up and closing up for her husband to enjoy himself for many years. She was no longer willing to adjust her life to something that she did not really want or enjoy
