“For thou hast hid their heart from understanding: therefore shalt thou not exalt them” – Job 17:4
Understanding is a very important thing to acquire. Understanding makes you a nice person. Understanding makes you a kind person. Understanding makes you a lovely person. Understanding makes you attractive. With all your getting, you must get understanding (Proverbs 4:7)!
Not being able to relate with things you have not experienced, is the same as not having understanding.
1. A lack of understanding is a terrible deficiency. Jesus was grieved when He met people who lacked understanding. “And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding?” (Matthew 15:16).
2. The prophets were grieved when the people of God lacked understanding. “Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not” (Jeremiah 5:21).
3. It is prophesied that people will be deficient in understanding. They will not want to retain God in their thoughts. They will lack empathy. They will lack grace. They will be without understanding because it is one of the tragedies of the human race. The lack of understanding is in the list of the most terrible evils to befall mankind.
“And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness… whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, without understanding…” (Romans 1:28-31).
